Norway: to shape a majority government becomes an increasingly difficult task

Center-Right’s electoral success does not offer Conservatives and Liberal parties many reasons for celebrations: the parliament, resulting from the vote on September 9th, still maintains a balance that will allow Erna Solberg and Knut Harild Hareide to run the country only if they will be working together in an alliance that would include populists, liberals, conservatives and christian democrats, unity of purpose that was completely missing Wednesday, September 25th, when moderate parties met with the Conservatives  (Høyre ).

The meeting brought together – in addition to Solberg, future premier (Conservatives) – Trine Skei Grande (Venstre, Liberals) and Knut Arild Hareide (Kristelig People’s Party, Christian Democrats) while the Progress Party (Fremskrittspartiet) met to establish the line to be maintained in upcoming negotiations. Hareide is well aware that the leading exponents of his party are minded to refuse an alliance that includes the Fremskrittspartiet. The Liberals are more optimistic about an agreement, but they don’t really trust populists.
